  • Born in in Tooting and raised on a council estate in Earlsfield, his father was a London Transport bus driver for more than 25 years
  • Councillor for Tooting ward in the London Borough of Wandsworth from 1994 to 2006 (Deputy Leader of the Labour Group for 5 years). He became the youngest councillor in London when first elected at the age of 23
  • Prior to becoming an MP, Khan worked as a Human Rights solicitor and was a founding partner of one of the country’s leading Human Rights firms
  • He is a former Chair of the Fabian Society and is a patron of Progress. He belongs to the GMB union and is a member of the CWU and UNISON group of MPs
  • Elected as Member of Parliament for Tooting in 2005. He was the first ever MP of Islamic faith ever elected in London

During his time in parliament he has held a number of frontbench roles including:

  • Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Justice Secretary from 2010 to 2015, acting as Labour lead on judicial policy
  • Shadow Secretary of State for Transport from May 2010 to October 2010, acting as Labour lead on transport policy
  • Minister of State for Transport from June 2009 to May 2010, with responsibility for city and regional networks, buses and cycling, Crossrail, environment and climate change and integration with European transport networks
  • Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government from October 2008 to June 2009, with special responsibility for community cohesion, religion and belief, the fire and rescue service, race, preventing violent extremism, planning and local government
  • Assistant Whip at HM Treasury from July 2007 to October 2008
